The 2026 National Critical Research Infrastructure initiative invests in research infrastructure to help Australian researchers address complex health problems in areas of unmet medical need. Who Can Apply

Must have an active ABN and be incorporated in Australia. Eligible lead entities include medical research institutes, universities, corporate Commonwealth entities, and corporations including businesses and not-for-profits. Individuals, partnerships, unincorporated associations, non-corporate Commonwealth entities and most trusts cannot apply. Stream 3 requires a consortium with at least one academic organisation, one other organisation, and cash co-contributions of at least 34% of eligible project costs.
Applicants must have an Australian Business Number, be incorporated in Australia, and be an eligible entity under section 24 of the Medical Research Future Fund Act 2015. Eligible entities are a medical research institute, a university, a corporate Commonwealth entity, or a corporation including businesses and not for profits. Ineligible applicants include individuals, partnerships, unincorporated associations, non-corporate Commonwealth entities, trusts unless applying through an incorporated trustee, organisations not listed in the eligible entity list, organisations or project partners on the National Redress Scheme list of institutions that have not joined or signified intent to join, and employers of 100 or more employees that have not complied with the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012. Joint applications are encouraged. Stream 3 applications must be from a consortia including at least one academic organisation and at least one other organisation such as industry or a state or territory government, with combined cash contributors of at least 34% of total eligible project costs confirmed in writing.

Funded activities include developing or expanding research enablers such as biobanks, tissue repositories, novel platforms and secure health data environments; translating or implementing artificial intelligence technologies into health applications; building significant critical research infrastructure through co-investment partnerships; and enhancing mRNA technologies, platforms or equipment.

Expected Outcomes

Expected outcomes include stronger national health and medical research infrastructure, increased research capacity and capability, implementation of innovative digital and artificial intelligence health applications, and accelerated development of mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need.
