Eligible organisations that can support innovative medical research projects to improve health benefits for Australians may apply. The initiative has four streams: Innovation enablers, Digitisation of health care, Co-investment partnerships, and mRNA technology enablers. An application may only be submitted to one stream, and applicants must specify the stream in their application. Stream 3 specifically requires co-investment on a cash-only basis with the research sector, state and/or territory governments, and industry. Establishing or expanding critical research infrastructure such as biobanks, tissue repositories, novel research platforms, secure health data environments, digital therapeutics, artificial intelligence-enabled health interventions, clinical software applications, facilities, personnel, equipment, and mRNA technology platforms or equipment.

Funded projects are expected to strengthen Australia's health and medical research capability, enable world-class research in areas of unmet medical need, improve translation of digital and mRNA technologies into practice, and deliver infrastructure that supports innovative medical research with health benefits for Australians.
