• Must have received correspondence from the Royal Commission requiring or permitting formal engagement • Eligible engagement includes being called or granted leave to appear as a witness at a public or private hearing • Eligible engagement includes being granted leave to attend a private session where legal representatives are authorised to be present • Eligible engagement includes being requested to attend an interview • Eligible engagement includes being requested to provide a written statement to be used as evidence • Eligible engagement includes being required to comply with a notice to produce • Applicants should exhaust other options for legal assistance before applying • If eligible for another form of legal assistance, you will generally not be eligible under this scheme • Organisations will be assessed on whether they can meet legal costs without serious financial difficulty • Individuals called in their personal capacity are exempt from financial circumstances assessment
To be eligible, applicants must have received correspondence from the Royal Commission calling them, or granting leave to appear, as a witness at a public or private hearing; granting leave to attend a private session where legal representatives are authorised to be present; requesting attendance at an interview; requesting a written statement to be used as evidence; or requiring compliance with a notice to produce. The department may seek advice from the Office of the Royal Commission to determine eligibility. Organisations called by the Royal Commission will be assessed on whether they can meet legal representation costs without serious financial difficulty. Individuals called in their personal capacity are exempt from an assessment of financial circumstances. Applicants should exhaust other options for legal assistance before applying, and if eligible for another form of assistance they will generally not be eligible under this scheme.
